John of Ragusa

John of Ragusa
(d. c. 1443)
   Bishop and Theologian.
John was born John Stojkovic ´ in Ragusa. He was a member of a Dominican Order and by 1420 he was teaching at the University of Paris. As papal theologian, he preached the opening sermon at the Council of Basle and debated with the followers of John hus. Later he was sent by Pope Martin V to Constantinople to try to bring about the union between the Eastern and Western Churches. He successfully persuaded John Palaeologus of Constantinople to send a delegation to the Council. He became Bishop of Ardijsek in 1438 and possibly a Cardinal in 1440. However, he is mainly remembered for his writings against the Hussites and for the Greek manuscripts he brought back from Constantinople to Basle. These were used by erasmus in his edition of the Greek New Testament and for his work on the early Church Fathers.
